    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is vBase?

vBase is a platform for creating auditable information on the timestamp and author of digital objects.

vBase allows anyone to provably show a bi-temporal point-in-time view of their data.

Do hedge funds really care about this?

You bet. We have decades of experience as buyside data consumers and are very familiar with how hard hedge funds work to determine whether your historical data is credible.

There’s a reason funds request long trials and generally wait well beyond trial periods to put 3rd party data into production. The fundamental question funds want to answer is whether the historical data you’ve sent them matches what they would have received if they had been your live customer.

Can you deliver every day? Do you have significant revisions or re-statements? Has any data been accidentally omitted from the historical series? Has there been overfitting in the data?

vBase helps answer these questions at the very first meeting, getting your data into production and live profitable use more quickly.

What are the benefits of vBase?

vBase allows alternative data vendors to communicate the quality of their data, overcoming much of the asymmetry of information inherent to 3rd party data.

    vBase allows you to

    a) Show when your data was created and who created it
    b) Validate this with a single click or line of code
    c) Validate this information forever
    d) Maintain full control over your data, including full privacy
    e) Achieve all this while avoiding single points of failure or lock-in with any vendors, including vBase

How hard is it to start using vBase?

Starting to use vBase takes only 5 minutes. Our open-source Python library lets you begin making and validating vBase stamps with a single line of code. Alternatively, our web application allows the same via a handy graphical interface.

    How much does vBase cost?

Our free plan offers 100 stamps per month, enough to stamp 3 datasets once daily. Our $49/month plan offers 400 stamps. Additional stamps cost $0.12.

The free or $49/month plan should be sufficient for most vendors. Please feel free to contact us to consult further or if you believe you may have bespoke requirements.

Can I just forward potential clients old e-mails instead?

This approach fails for several reasons.

    1. Validation of old emails and their timestamps is generally impossible. It’s not what e-mail certificates were designed to do.
    2. This process cannot indicate whether there are other e-mails with other data that you aren’t forwarding.
    3. This doesn’t scale. Verifying old emails is a bespoke manual (and surprisingly difficult) process that cannot be included any reasonable data pipeline.
    4. Forwarding old emails lacks credibility and may suggest to clients that you are not committed to a high-quality data maintenance process.
    5. Old e-mails get lost sometimes. They’re not a strong foundation for a critical business process.
